Kamen Rider Ryuki [PSX]
"The game is as fascinating as its tv series!!"
Greetings, everyone. Before we start, I would like you to know that I've been Kamen Riders fan since I was a kid and I still continue to love them so I decided to make a non-biased review for this game, even though I'm not good at making reviews.
Just a brief info, Kamen Riders (translated as Masked Riders) are japanese tv heroes targeted mainly for kids and teenagers alike. Every year a new Kamen Rider is made with additional names. The tradition of their 3D fighting games start from the original Kamen Riders, then to Kamen Rider V3, followed by Kamen Rider Kuuga, Kamen Rider Agito and last but not least the 2002 Kamen Rider, Kamen Rider Ryuki!
Gameplay 7/10
Those who played other 3D Kamen Rider games might find that the gameplay in this game is very different. This time we use card battle system in hand-to-hand combat. The cards (they call them 'vents' by the way) are very useful as they provide you with new weapons, shields to lower damage and they can even summon monsters and your final attacks to defeat the opponents in beautiful ways.
Each character has different set of vents, but they are not random. That what makes some characters better than the others. Example, Kamen Rider Raia has a 'Copy Vent' that is able to copy the weapons the opponents are using. Kamen Rider Solda has three vents that let him use different gun weapons. Kamen Rider Ryuki got more weapons that the others. Isn't that cool?
There are many playable characters in this game (they give you all the Kamen Riders you can see in the tv series in fact) and each unique attacks of the Kamen Riders in tv series can be performed here as well.
The worst things you might see in this game are the characters' animations, which are jerky and stiff, unlike other fighting games. The framerate is not very constant, too.
But still, this drawback is overlooked by the nice cutscenes you can see when you use the Kamen Rider's vents. There will be cool animations of Kamen Riders inserting the vents into the slots located somewhere on their bodies or weapons, summoning the monsters and striking the enemy.
Sound 6/10
I can't complain about the music since they're all taken from the tv series itself. They are quite good and each character has his/her own background music. So you know what music to expect just by judging the character that you are facing.
But still, I don't like the sound effects, like the sounds that you hear when you land punches on opponents. It's either too weird or too simple.
My last complaint is, the finishing music, which is played when your opponent's hp bar is near zero (it's 3D fighting Kamen Rider game classic)is too long to show the singer's voices...if you always beat the game fast you might not even know that that's the song you are listening and not music. The developers are supposed to edit it short just like Kamen Rider Agito's
Controls 5/10
The controls are okay, but I hate them. Why? Because they have two attack buttons, but they are not punch and kick buttons like ordinary fighting games but instead one hit and combo button. One hit button let you strike the enemy in one hit. It can be a punch or a kick depending on which characters you are using. Combo button let you do combo with punches and kicks mixed in it. So we have no freedom whether to punch or to kick! The jerky movements the matter worse.
Replayability 6/10
You got two goals to achieve in this game. First, collect all cards that have to be purchased by points you can earn in 1P Challenge Mode and 1P Battle Mode. Second, unlock all the characters. Unlocking all characters might sound simple but they are not since the characters are many. But after you completed those two things, I think the only fun left is playing 2P Battle mode. Like other Kamen Rider games, it's not very replayable, especially when you already unlocked everything. But that's what console fighting game is all about, right?
Overall 7/10
This is for Playstation One, dear. You might not like it at all despite its innovation and creativity in gameplay elements and the efforts the developers have put in. But if you're 'new era' Kamen Riders fan, also Kamen Rider Ryuki fan, I guess you should buy it. This is the only game for Kamen Rider Ryuki, after all.
